Sounds like your mech is a good guy.
If it was a constant low frequency vibration that didn't disappear when you lifted off the throttle, it could be a tire issue.
When an inner driver goes bad (besides staying out all night, drinking, and smoking cigarettes, that is), it makes the speed of the axle and tire vary throughout the rotation. It'll essentially pull faster and slower through one rotation of the tire - that's what the vibration is. When you're decelerating, it contacts the back driving surfaces and keeps the output at a constant rotational speed.
Here's what you need to have your mechanic check - tightness of ball joints, CV boots, inner and outer tie rod ends, passenger-side motor mount, and the inner driver. And, have him look at the tires for slipped belts and out-of-round. That should cover everything that could be associated with that vibration.
The inner driver should have very little play up & down and front-to-back in relation to the transmission. If it moves up and down or back & forth, the innder driver carrier bearing could be bad - not visciously expensive. When the wheel is off the ground, the tripod bearing (which goes inside the inner driver) won't necessarily have much play because it's contacting the inner driver at a different point than it does when the wheel is in its normal position.
(More than you ever wanted to know :-)
