That's always horrible to hear about a 900 biting the dust. They're such great workhorses. I think about all the troubles my car has given me, and then I read stories here on the BB and realize how lucky I am that I haven't rebuilt the tranny, how there's no rust on the car, how my biggest problem were slow oil leaks and a drooping headliner. Good luck with your next ride.
But stay away from the VWs. They always used to be horribly built, but I thought the new generation had fixed those problems. Uh uh. My sister has a 1998 Passat that she bought off lease and the engine management system has been giving her trouble for the past 8 months. A friend from work has a 2000 Jetta that destroyed itself because of faulty plugs and ECU...plus the latest numbers from the Highway Safety Institute puts VW squarely at the bottom of new vehicle quality with something like 120 defects per 100 vehicles. (To give you a sense of how bad that is, the winner, Honda, had something like 60 defects per 100 vehicles.) I'd say find yourself a 900 with a good maintenance history, but that's just me....:)
Good luck!
