I would also remove the knee bolster, but if Ryan says you don't have to, try it without doing that. If you have to remove the knee bolster, there are a few more bolts to remove, one on each side of the bolster accessed from the wheel well/engine side of the fender wells, another bolt behind the ash tray as well as the back side of the special bolt behind the ashtray...once you removed the center console there's another bolt with a tapped hole in the head (that you pulled to get the ashtray/center console out). Generally the sides of the knee bolster are one side is a bolt and the other is a stud (you end up with a nut and washer in your wrench) which helps to align/hold the bolster when you have to put it back in. Watch out for the wire to the ashtray light and have some duct tape handy to retape the wires.
I also like to remove the heater duct and check it for warping/clean it. The heater duct on my 87 had a slot in it that was too long for the center console...heat from the heater duct went into the center console and heated up the equalizer. Just put some duct tape over the slot enough to make sure the duct isn't venting heat into your center console.
Now would also be a good time to check the recirculation door on the heater core cover...that door gets warped and/or the foam rubber gasket/seal around it disintegrates and the non-recirculation doesn't work real well because the door won't seal (the door is open when recirc is on).
