On my '83, the AC pressure sensor is on the compressor - yours may be elsewhere (specifying the year would help!). If you have an electrical schematic for your car, you can trace along the system and make sure each point is energized when the switch is on.
One of the typical failure points of my AC system over the years has been the relay that controls the compressor clutch, specifically the "points" on the relay closure. If your AC has been working intermittently, and has actually produced cold air, then it probably has pressure in the system. I have fixed the relay problem by unplugging the relay, taking off the plastic cover with a screwdriver, and scraping off the "points" with a knife - don't scrape, sand or file away too much or you will remove the plating that is supposed to keep it from corroding! Also, if I remember correctly, the AC fan relay is identical, so you can try switching them for diagnostic purposes - don't run your AC without a cooling fan!
