Proper coolant, no incidences of overheat, fan modification, lower temp thermostat and fan switch will be a good insurance policy for your 2.1L head gasket. Don't skimp on any of these things. As to the '90, one or more overheat cycles, ruptured hose, leakey water pump, poor coolant protection... You never know. If the '93 has blue coolant in it, it is probably a better bet than if it has green. This would indicate Saab service and/or possible coolant changes. I have 2 '92s one needed a head gasket at 115 the other is still fine at 125, though it could 'go' at any time. This one had blue and the other green. Was that the only reason, no, but it is probably a contributor. Unless you KNOW the service history, you just don't know. Budget for the replacement, you may need it.
