strange tach behavior

On a recent trip during some 100-degree heat, my tachometer began exhibiting the following behavior: after I start up the car the tach is dead (0 rpms) and the battery and parking brake lights are dimly lit. Once I rev the engine to about 3500 rpms, the tach suddenly comes back and the lights go back to normal. After that, even at lower rpms, everything is fine for the duration of the drive.
Is there a particular relay that I should be looking for, or any usual suspects? Could this be the beginning of something more serious?
Thanks,
Adam Young,
