restoration type questions (long)

i am out looking for an spg, and ive turned one up thats got some work that needs done on it, so im looking for advice on how manageable a project car it will be for me.
there seems to be some rust on the fenders (bubbling the paint, not showing through), and on the inside of the doors. Im guessing this needs to be sanded down, and repainted. Since the car has a clear coat, the paint would probably have to be done by a shop, has anyone does this and had it turn out nice, and whats a ball park price? (is it easiest to take the panels off and bring them to the shop?)
the car needs a new transmission, so before i get serious i'll have to ask my dad if he minds me taking up his garage/driveway for a few weeks to work on it during weekends. Replacing the transmission would be a good opportunity to put on a heftier pinion bearing?
unless i want to drive to illinois from new jersey, if i think the project is within my reach, shipping the car might be an option. any idea on ballpark prices to have a whole car shipped?
