Alex....first of all, I have an older model C900 ('79) with a metal gas tank. The rubber baffel is connected to the bottom of the fuel pump. When I say it is turning to "gue", I mean it is badly deteriorated; has been sort of melted by the fuel. I can't imagine this could happen after 8 months. Speaking of the fuel sending unit, I am having a hard time finding even a used one. The only solution I have come up with is to send the unit in the car now to be rebuilt by Programainc.com when it completely dies.
Why did I get into the fuel tank anyway? Was getting bad fuel odors in the cabin. Found a crimped vapor line, but the main source of the smell was coming from the fuel pump and fuel sending unit. Previous sloppy installations appear to have been done with old gaskets/o-ring. Also some of the metal tabs where the fuel pump drops into the tank were bent. General cleaning of surfaces between the fuel sending unit and the tank is also in needed. Thank for your words of wisdom.
