In our immediate family, I, as _pater familias_, am held reponsible for almost all the mechanical work on 7 of the 9 cars, among which are several that my kids (all in their early 20s or 30's) dragged home as super bargains with the attitude that "Oh, Daddy can fix that!": a '90 900S (c. 140,000 miles), a '91 BMW 318i (215,000 miles), a '93 Audi 90S (186,000), and my beloved "OLD SMKY" '85 Mercedes 300TD (321,000), which serves as a family mulch and topsoil hauler. As a result, I regularly check at least 6 automotive websites.

mercedesshop.com hosts a varied group, and the diesel enthusiasts tend to be a lot like the saabnet.com clan, but there are a few characters who fulfill the M-B stereotype, and some purveyers of outdated folklore about maintenance and modifications -- I remember the horror among certain regulars when I mentioned that I had put 60 series tires on the old station wagon, thus violating the integrity of a suspension design which the M-B engineers had clearly intended for nothing more modern than 70 series.

bimmer.org varies a lot, too, depending on which model's bulletin board you consult, but the E30 group is dominated by obnoxious teenagers bragging about the "angel eyes" headlight surrounds or 5000 watt woofers they have installed in the car that their grandmother gave them for their 16th birthday. At best, there's one good bit of mechanical information per day.

The Audi group seems to lean heavily to hot-rodders, looking for new chips to try, and modified throttle bodies, and even some trying to swap Audi V8s into smaller models.
