As far as basic timing goes, it should idle at the same point where it did before you disassembled. In other words, if it idled at 900 rpm prior, then it should be 900 now. If not, then rotate the distributor body (after loosening the three bolts) either clockwise of counterclockwise to adjust. That should be enough to eliminate the backfiring and no acceleration, you'll have to have a mechanic do the final adjusting. From your description it sounds like your timing is set too retarded. A simple adjustment from this point would be to rotate the dist body clockwise a few degrees. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch or more. Too far in that direction and the engine begins to ping while accelerating. That's when you know you've gone too far that way.
