I don't think your engine could even start, let alone run if the distributor wires were connected wrong. It would just backfire and buck.
Regardless if you have an 8 or 16V engine - while looking at the distributor cap from the front, starting at the near 12 o'clock position and going clockwise, the cap wire order is 3, 1, 2, 4 (numbers corresponding to cylinder numbers). As a guide to general timing, if you have an 8V engine, the #3 plug slot on the dist cap is almost straight up and down vertically with the #2 slot, but offset by a few degrees, as if the #3 slot were on minute 57 of a clock. With a 16V engine, the #3 plug slot is also near vertical with the #2 slot, but offset as if the #3 slot were on minute 4 of a clock face.
