catalytic converter red, I mean RED HOT

'90 900 non-turbo. Just got done crying and whining about the process to change the exhaust heat shield, maybe you caught my show. Anyway, put it all together and started the engine and let it idle for a few minutes while I washed up. Come out the door and I've got smoke starting to roll out from underneath. The cat is cherry red. Shut it down and let it cool off. I bought the car last winter and have maybe run it 20 miles, so have little history, yet it seemed to run ok, a little irradic on cold starts. The old shield was burned right out all the way around the cat. Also it's an auto tran, if it matters. I looked in the archives and found nothing appearing to be directly related to this. So what's going on here besides possible melting all my wires?
