First of all regarding burning all your wires: that's how cars catch fire! I've seen (and heard about) quite a few cars in scrap yards that caught fire because of a melted wiring harness. As far as why your cat get's hot - either the engine is running too rich, or the cat is dead. Take it to a shop pronto for an examination.
