I've dismantled two C900 shifter consoles. The first time I left the shift rod connected to the tranny, the second time I seperated that rod from the tranny. The first time was to discern why the key was so difficult to turn. I discovered lots of dried grease/soft drink remains in and around the key mechanism. A good cleaning with solvent and a relubrication solved the problem. The second time was to address a sloppy shifter which made it difficult to find gears, plus examine why the shifter slipped into the reverse location without pulling the gear knob collar up beforehand. The sloppy shifting was because the rubber collar which held the shift rod firmly was shot. The spring operated "grips" that centered the shift lever over the 3rd/4th position were also too loose. Finally, the plastic bottom tray reverse stop position had worn away. I replaced both the rubber collar and that plastic bottom tray with good replacement parts, and shortened the "grips" spring. With the unit reassembled and reconnected to the tranny, I discovered I had no 1st or 2nd gear. I took some time to do a mental mechanical logic analysis (laying on my back beneath the car staring at the back of the tranny and holding an imaginary shift lever and pictured the entire mechanism in play) and figured out the reason. I loosened the console shift rod-to-tranny coupling, manually popped the tranny in reverse, then retightened the coupling with the shifter set in reverse. That solved the problem.
