PAG oil was designed for early R-134a systems. Ester oil came along later as a wonder oil that is compatible with the mineral oils used in R-12 systems and the PAG oil that was used in R134a systems (bot not both at the same time . . .). PAG and mineral oil are not compatible, so if you have any residual mineral oil in your system, you'll have to flush the compressor or the system before you install the new compressor.
If you install the newer green o-rings, they are made out of Viton and are compatible with all the oils. The original black o-rings were probably nitrile which doesn't like PAG. Ester is pretty safe for any rubber . . .
Since your old compressor failed, you really need to flush the system anyways to get the metallic residue out (a failing compressor usually crates metallic shavings as the pistons grind to a halt in the compressor), so you might as well leave the compressor alone and top off the system with PAG oil after you flush it.
