Jon's original question was about checking oil. I assumed he wouldn't have left it loose when he drove away ;)
One reason for the big diameter cap with the spring, is it acts as a kind of relief valve. If the PCV check-valve on a turbo fails, and the bigger tube to the aircleaner plugs; that would combine to pressurize the crankcase. Then it would just lift the seal at the top of the dipstick tube & let the air vent out...
