Your thoughts on miss problem?

For awhile my '89T has had a pretty obnoxious miss between ~2800-3200 rpm, which is independent of load. It's intermittent, but getting to be more & more frequent. On the highway, once above 3200 I'm usually fine. When driving really hard, though, I have the problem at higher revs, too. Also, occasionally, I'll get a miss below 2800.
Due to what I thought was a loose Hall Sensor plug and a sometime improvement from strapping zipties over it (which worked only temporarily and probably had nothing to do with the zipties and more to do with stopping for a minute to futz with them), I suspected bad sensor electrics & replaced the distributor, presuming it was some sort of centripital force thing going on in there. Problem persists.
Cap & Rotor/Bougicords/NGKs are young. Ignition amplifier contacts are clean.
One thing I noticed today on the highway was the tach would drop a full 1000 rpms on a miss - does this indicate anything? Bad ignition amp? What are the symptoms of a bad coil?
Because it's intermittant, I feel the only thing I can do at this point is start replacing things, unless you recognize this situation.
Thanks...
