Thanks all for your input! I figured it out.
I stopped by my favorite friendly neighborhood SAAB shop (Scanwest) & picked up a new cap & rotor. Didn't help. Next, I started testing the various ignition components, per Bentley. While doing so, I discovered that the coil contacts/washers were badly corroded. Problem solved, and it only cost me a new cap/rotor. Oh, yeah, and a used distributor. However, the replacement has the better vac advance (Bosch # ending in 010). Power is smoother - not a huge difference - but you can feel it.
One thing I learned today: Bentley's spec for spark plug wires (2k-3k ohms) is innaccurate: the shortest, 4th wire was ~1700. This was puzzling, cuz the wires have at most 10K on them, & probably less. Then I figured, well, it's shorter, so resistivity will be lower. Then I compared it to a brand new, unused 4th wire, the resistance was nearly the same.
