I have opened the bleeder screw (while holding base with a second wrench) while the car was close to operating temps. (I bled air from cooling system, which, by the way YOU SHOULD DO!)
Air pockets in the coolant will cause it not to circulate and can create hot spots in the engine, need I say more? So, next time, use 2 wrenches and stand on opposite side of the car, and you should be OK. Remember, your cooling system is under (up to) 17 pounds per square inch of pressure! (And can go over 212°F, too!)
P.S. I bled system by loosening bleeder, as in Townsend instructions, while filling with coolant--engine cold--heater valve set to HOT, so heater core isn't shut off creating a huge air pocket. Then, leave bleeder screw open after starting engine, until a steady stream of coolant starts to come out--coolant should be only warm to the touch at this point. Close screw (carefully).
Hope this helps!
