Need Advice: Heating/Ventilation Problem

I've had my '86 SPG for about a month, and I've noticed that the passenger compartment gets pretty warm, even on short drives. No problem when the A/C is on. But when just the vents are open, the middle vent blows cool air, but the side vents (and I think the under-dash vents) blow hot. I looked through the Bentley, and it suggested that the problem may be (1) a broken/damaged heater control rod or (2) broken heater control valve. I haven't looked inside the dash to check yet. It sounds like replacing the valve is a big, messy deal (draining coolant, etc.) and I really don't want to do that if I don't have to.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any quick fixes to suggest or alternate issues that may be the source of the problem? If it is the valve, any gueses as to how expensive it would be to have a repair shop do it?
