Perhaps the boot is still connected to the shift rod, but on the inside of the car? That would make your task easier. I've used a post 1990 shift rod boot on my 82, a matter of cutting holes where the e-brake cables run. Other than that the size is exactly the same. Perhaps you could patch the additional holes from the parts car boot with rubber cement if you have need to put that boot on. As far as installation, so long as you can seperate the rod from the tranny (however you decide to do that), the task is relatively simple.
