Wow, I'm just full of advice tonight (or I'm extremely bored). I had this same damn problem (very recently- you can see my previous posts about this).
First of all, you should see the battery light when you turn the key in the run position w/o starting the car. If it remains on after you have started the car, that means that there is a fault in the charging circuit.
Things to check:
1. Make sure the alternator ground wire is attached between the engine block and the alternator housing.
2. Check your battery cables- make sure the insulation isn't deteriorating. Also, check the ground cable and the grounding point below the radiator. If the ground point is all rusty and yucky, chances are, it's not a very good ground.
3. The little grn/wht wire in the back of the alternator that connects to the little lug (next to the big lug where + cable goes). This is prone to falling off, especially when gorrilla-like mechanics replace the oil filter, and don't notice their forearm snapping the wire off.
4. That battery light in the dashboard- I's pretty damn important. The battery doesn't charge without it, or if it's burned out. Also, it HAS to be a 2 watt bulb, you can check this by removing it and looking at the base. Green=2w, Black=1w.
5. Faulty circuit somewhere (requires extensive testing, and is not the likely culprit.)
6. The new alternator you bought. I bought a "rebuilt" alternator, and installed it and kept breaking down. I checked every f@#$ing wire in the car, replaced the alt. ground wire, the battery cables, only to find out (after plenty of blood, sweat, and beers) that the replacement alternator that I put in was NFG. I suppose the lesson learned here is to not buy rebuilt parts from AutoZone and other chain retailers, and buy one that is factory rebuilt by Bosch.
Anyway good luck, and I hope your still alive after reding this.
