Timing question

88 spg. I'm concerned that the plastic clutch cover is not aligned properly after clutch install. Why, because I just checked the timing and it's set at 9. This is with vacuum advance plugged, idle is 850.All new ignition parts. I'm using my old craftsman timing light w\advance knob. knob is set to 0. Is there another mark somewhere on the block that can be used. Before, timing was set to 18. I'm lucky in the sense that I can read all the marks on the flywheel without marking them. Does a digital timing light display the timing. What i mean is that when you check timing, does it show up in a window on the gage? I just can't beleive that my timing is at 9 at idle. When before it was 18. I don't think the cover could have moved that much, could it? Hell, maybe that's why i'm boosting so high. Any help would be great.
Thanks?
