Moving Calipers away from the Rotors

I need to take the rotor off of my front passenger side wheel, as i believe the screw(s) which hold the protective shield in place have fallen between the shield and the rotor, and are now wobbling around the bottom of the shield. By loosening the rotors, the screws fall right out, but replacing the screws and tightening them is difficult if you can't get behind the rotor.
I went through this same repair a few months ago and couldn't get the rotors off without removing the caliper. I wasn't sure how to move the caliper so that i could get at the hole behind the rotor where the screw goes, so i kept the rotor on and did the best i could by getting the screw lined up with the hole by using vice grips and then using a socket to tighten. I guess the screws weren't in tight enough, as it appears the problem has surfaced again, so this time i want to do it right!
How do i move the calipers enough so that the rotors can be removed? Is there more to it than removing the 2 bolts that hold the calipers in place? Anything i need to be cautious of that is extra fragile and i'd likely end up breaking if i'm not warned about it?
Thanks.
