from my reading, I dont think the 1990 has any major trouble spots that other nearby years dont.

as usual, beware of rust if you are buying a car that has seen winters where the roads are salted. On an spg, you'll find rust on the bottoms of doors, and sometimes under the panels, and in the usual places in wheel wells, under hoods, trunk lid, floorpan, etc.

dash cracks, headliner falling, you'll see these easy.

Perhaps someone else can help me on this one ... but I _think_ that a 1990 has the larger pinion bearing in the transmission, so thats a plus. I think transmission failure is going to be the biggest issue for the 90's spgs over anything else from what ive heard.

you might expect the gas tank levels to not read perfect. My 92 900s doesnt read accurately, I go by miles on the tripometer, and not the gas guage (tends to read empty too soon).

look out for smoke coming from the tailpipe right when you start the car, that can mean a bad turbo. Hopefully the car should boost up to the red, but probably not into it without any modifications.

I think that year has power assisted secondary seatbelts? They tend to weaken as time goes on, so maybe check this out. Make sure the power locks work predictably.

Does the AC work? If its blowing warm, it could be for a number of reasons.

cruise and seat heaters are probably on the car too. do they work? if not, you can probably live without, but might be a bargaining chip.

eh, thats it for what I am good for. Probably some more engine checks you can do. Don't forget to take it to a shop to get some test run on it.
oil in coolant, compression on all 4 cylinders (a certain value is not required, but a low deviation between cylinders is), etc. I think you can ask a shop to check a car out and expect to pay for 1 hr of time.

good luck,
Dave
