Overheating -- did I kill it?

Ok, I think I've committed the ulitmate act of pure stupidity: I drove my 1987 900 turbo (250k +) with little or no coolant, and now it will not start.
I've had a small coolant leak that I haven't paid enough attention to, and driving home from a meeting one day in heavy traffic, the engine temp rose pretty high, but not off the charts. Upon arriving at home, I choose to drink a beer and go to bed, rather than take a look at the situation.
The next time I drove the car, which was several days later, I completely forgot about the coolant situation. In fact, I did not remember until I heard a tapping noise from the motor. In shock, I looked down at the temp gauge to confirm my worst fear: the coolant temp was off the gauge.
Now the motor will turn, maybe fire on one cylinder, but will not start. I suspect I've caused drastic damage.
So, my questions:
1) How do I diagnose the damage?
2) If I've destroyed the motor, how hard is it to install a new one? What is a good price for one? Is this worth considering, even in a generic sense?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
-Bonehead.
