I've got a 2001 base model 9-3. The warranty is 4 years/50k miles.
So far no major problems, although I've noticed some reluctance at times
to go into either 3rd or 4th gear--a quick pump of the clutch pedal takes
care of it, but I may have the dealer look into it more closely when it
goes in for its 30k major service. The shift action is still eons better than the 900's.
Oveall, it feels a bit more snug inside, and the cornering isn't
as flat as my 88 900s. OTOH, it probably does actually corner faster than
the old car can, if you can get used to the tipsiness.
I miss the older car's deep-cut door sills, but with the hatch the 9-3 has more utility than my 4-door model C900, even with the lack of a flat floor. It is MUCH quieter (at 180k miles the old car has gotten to be a real rattletrap), and has the airbags and superior whiplash protection.
I still love to drive the old beast, and will keep it as long as we can.
But the 9-3 has 50% more power and torque vs. the non-turboed 900S, yet
gets better gas mileage and has a larger trunk. So you can guess which
car I much prefer to take the family in when we go on short trips.
Plus, the damned headliner isn't falling down....
