Todd,
I bought a 97 "NG900" (SE, the turbo) about 2 years ago after many many years of C900s. It was supposed to replace my ageing '85 900T. While not the same as a 9-3, there are some similarities that you might watch for. The flat load floor is a thing of the past, at least on the NGs. The safety bar thing gets in the way and the whole idea of a cargo area resembling a C900 is a joke. I use my 9000 for hauling instead. Also, watch the outward vision, as we find that the rear quarters really obscure your visibility (on a 3dr) and have led to some close calls while changing lanes. The seat back releases (to tilt forward) are cheap too, as the cables seem to stretch and apparently you have to take it apart to get it to work correctly again. This drives my family nuts.
On the other hand, the car is comfortable and runs well, at 80k the brakes have not been touched yet, and I have not seen any body rust, as opposed to the C900s that have lots of areas for rust. It is a lot quieter and the sound system and such is much better, but as my wife says its "petite" compared to the C900s. We noticed this with the pedals, as it is easy with boots on to hit the brake and clutch together, as they seem to be closer spaced than a C900 or 9000. If you have big feet this could be a concern too.
Good luck!
Jim
