idler is easy - AC clutch is tougher Posted by JimBlake [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: A/C Pulley (long, but thorough), thereuare, Wed, 4 Sep 2002 11:21:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That assembly on the AC compressor is its clutch. The idler pulley is smaller, & located about halfway down to the crank pulley. The idler pulley isn't connected to anything; its only job is to adjust the tightness of the AC belt because the compressor itself doesn't move.
Let your engine idle, with the AC on, & watch the compressor. When the clutch is engaged the whole thing will spin with the pulley. When the clutch disengages, only the pulley spins. The rest of the clutch along with the compressor itself will stop spinning. Kind of like the "hub" of the compressor pulley will stop spinning.
I had fits trying to prove where the noise came from. When I removed the idler, I couldn't spin it fast enough (by hand) to make the noise. Only when I gave up & replaced it did I know for sure. But it was a constant screetching noise. Not just for a moment at startup. That sounds more like the crank pulley :o(
You could remove the AC belt & start the engine. Then if the noise is still there it can't possibly be the AC idler.
