I didn't use a lift and I don't think you need one, either. It might make things easier is all. (Mechanic's wish list, anyone?) I did, though, need the 900's own scissors jack to raise the ground clearance just an inch or so to fit my drain pan underneath--more on that below.

You can reach engine drain from the top of the engine bay; I did it that way, too. A catch basin/pan of some shallow sort (to fit under your SAAB, which doesn't have a WHOLE lot of ground clearance) will work to catch flow from both petcock and the engine drain plug. Like I said, my pan lacked about 1-2" from fitting under my car, so I jacked up my 900 with its scissors jack from the trunk, and the tire never left the ground. All I really did was take the load off the suspension.

I think you might want a larger drain pan than a 10 qt. bucket. I bought the kind that's huge and yellow, at Advance Auto, about 30" across and that holds about 5 gallons, with a spout and neck with a cap on it to pour out neatly what you catch. I use that because I catch my old coolant AND my cooling system flush water.

Why? I have dogs at home and don't want them to get into any antifreeze. According to our vet, it only takes a dilute drop to kill a dog! It's a pain, but I bottled up all the old coolant and flush water in old gallon milk jugs--of which it took several! I plan to recycle it soon, but finding a place that takes it is a pain here.
