Problems with rear defroster on an 88 900S

I've reading the BB regarding rear defroster problems and haven't come across just what I am experiencing. My defroster works as designed, meaning it goes on and stays on for a few minutes. BUT the light in the switch does not go on, and neither does the light on the dash panel. The latter has not worked since just after I purchased the car 4 1/2 years ago.
The switch you say? Purchased a used one and still the same problems. The problem is not in the dash panel, because that is brand new and all the other light problems I was having are fixed as a result of replacing the mylar circuit board. Also, I know the bulb is good in the dash.
My question: can the relay be working (ie., sending current to the defroster on a timed basis) and still be the cause of the lights not indicating that the switch has been activated. OR is my second-hand replacement switch also bad? What do you all think? THANKS -- DM
