I heeded my own advice the other day and I'm still amazed at the results. I've known for some time about how important good clean connections and grounding is for trouble free operations of all electric functions. For the most part I've had good luck with few problems, except for an ongoing slight power drain when I've got the fog lights on supplementing the headlights and the sound system pumping at the same time. With three seperate amps (wired directly to the battery) pushing a combined 1000 watts, I reasoned it was just too much for the aging stock alternator and voltage regulator to keep up with. I envisioned a new alternator and regulator on the near horizon. But then the other day while looking for something to do on the car, I thought to tighten the engine compartment central ground point located behind the radiator. It's the point where a sizable group of ground wires attach to the frame with a 10 mm bolt. I'd had that ground point apart for a cleaning and reassenbly two years ago when I first began the restoration, but haven't touched it since thinking all was fine there. With the rachet attached I found it was snug, but I still tightened it another half a turn or so. And to my pleasant surprise, the power drain has now disappeared! The voltmeter reads a solid 13.5 volts under all driving conditions. Even during idle, which before the tightening would drift below 12. Yeah! So get your rachet sets out and tighten that bolt!
