Certainly no need to be sorry, as you've given me another means to check, which actually seems easier. Even if you gave incorrect info (which you didn't), i will never fault somebody for trying to help!

The thing that has me confused though (ok, one of the things) is that i DO get the squeal, but the marks that i made still line up, which would indicate no slipping (and my understanding is that slipping is what causes the squeal). This is contradictory.

I'm thinking about marking the pullies again via your method, which i believe means marking the part of the pulley in between the belts, is that correct? I assume marking the belts themselves would serve no purpose since they're different lengths, and therefore wouldn't line up after their first rotation.

Last question... since the problem is now likely the front seal and/or oil pump seal, is this replacement no longer as urgent (relatively speaking)? Sure the oil is contaminating the rubber between the pullies, but if it's not yet slipping, there would be less of a chance of total failure of the belts which would leave me stranded on the side of the road.

I'd really like to put this off for a few months, but i won't make any decisions until i further confirm that the pullies are/are not slipping. I only drive the car about twice per week (although it's my only car) and i put on about 5K miles per year.

Further thoughts?
