Very few mechanics are competent to do a good rebuild...although yours may fix the problem you have and replace a few obvious worn parts, he won't have access to factory fixes or probably a lot of experience with what should be replaced.
So you have a 92 Saab and question putting out 1500 if it needs a new transmission....you should be so lucky. A new 5 speed trans runs closer to 2500 rebuilt installed, plus clutch, etc. Not to mention the new leather seats, brakes, cv joints/boots, front axles, exhaust system, tires, etc., that a Saab takes....
If it's just a car (or a non turbo or automatic) to you my advice would be to sell it....if you really like the performance and feel of a turbo saab, it's generally worth it to repair/rebuild it as long as you like it...still cheaper than the sales tax on most new cars, not to mention the insurance on a new one.
