Sorry to say that I had a similar problem with my 88 radio lights; only half did not light up. I swapped it with another used radio, but was unhappy with the tape player performance. Finally went back to original and decided to get brave and spend some time. I tried replacing the little bulbs that light up the buttons. Took one from the second unit that I knew was working and unsoldered it. replaced one of the non-working lights, and voila! I would not have imagined these lights can burn out so easily, especially since they are wired and not meant for easy replacement. However, I replaced four bulbs and I now have my original radio with all the lights working! Can't guarantee your problem is the same, but thought it might be useful to know that those little bulbs can burn out, and can be replaced.
