I have an 87 900 with the Clarion deck. I replaced the bulbs as well and now have a visible display and buttons at night. In order to get to the bulbs you have to just about take the radio apart. I took it down to where the front panel was out of the frame but not completly free but loose enough that I could get a soldering iron in to unsolder the old bulbs. I bought the bulbs at Radio Shack, part numbe 2721092. They are labeled as PK2 12V Mircolamp. ($1.49 for a package of 2) Note the bulbs you take out have a rubber boot that covers the bulb. You will need to transfer the boot to the new bulbs. (Note the boot makes the bulb look like an LED)
Lastly, there are 4 bulbs total. One is hidden behind the LCD and you have to be carefull when prying up the side of the LCD cover to get to it. Since your LCD is already working that's not an issue. I, on the other hand, put the radio back together and tested it, then had to tear it down again to search for the hidden bulb.
