Just a wild guess...
I used to have a '86 Jetta which did exactly that whenever the plug wires were going bad. Your comment about a carburated engine without enough choke really nailed it. That's exactly what it felt like.
I originally refused to check anything to do with ignition, & I beat myself up looking at the CIS stuff. Then one night it was dark & I saw the arcing all over my plug wires. Once they got warm they didn't arc...
FWIW, my '89 900 sort of does the same thing. Only now I'm quick to suspect plug wires & I know they don't last forever.
But don't be afraid to clean your AIC valve.
