Greg,
Need some more info on that. Is the fan on (air distribution knob on any setting besides "0" at the bottom) when you turn the ignition key? Post again and let us know. (It is odd that is only happens in the AM.)
But, just going on what info is there, if your fan is left on while you start the car, then perhaps the fan motor is going bad (drawing more current--amps--than when new) and blowing the fuse. It takes a lot of amps to get the fan moving from a stop, then current draw lessens after fan is getting up to speed.
The sudden high current draw (say, of an older fan motor) could place enough current load on the system to blow the fan fuse, especially if the fan is really nearing the end of its useful life. (Is your fan motor as old as the car?)
I've read on Tom Townsend's page that you can diagnose this situation with an ammeter placed on the terminals where your fan fuse would normally go. Look at ammeter while someone else starts the SAAB:
"Connect the ammeter across the fuse for the fan and watch for a draw both on initial start up and upon sustained running. If it is over 28A, replace the fan. If it is under 28A, suspect the overheat strip in the resistor. If the fan draws over 22A after it is running, it may be popping the fuse at times. Replace it if that is the case."
"Resistor" which Townsend is referring to is the resistor pack, which can be seen from driver's side speaker hole when speaker removed.
And Jim Blake responded to a post like this a few days ago. Here's what he said:
"There is an overheat switch in the resistor pack. When the pack overheats, this switch shorts to ground, which blows the fuse. Maybe that's stuck in the short-to-ground state. Why couldn't they just make it open the circuit just like any iron or hair dryer??? If that's the trouble, then bypassing the resistor pack entirely (fan speed 4) will allow the fan to run without blowing the fuse."
Jim's "fan speed 4" is the BIG <> arrows setting next to "0" on the air distribution knob, it is the highest fan speed (higher than 3 on the other knob) and also activates the recirculate function, whether or not recirc. button is pushed in.
In case you get curious about taking the fan motor out, I'll link Townsend's page on that below.
Hope this helps!
