Look at the underside of your hood and see if there are abrasions or holes in the padding that correspond to high points from the engine. That's clue #2 that the engine is moving around.
Then, with the hood open, start the car and put it in gear. Keep the emergency brake on and heel the brake pedal while toing the gas slightly to pick up the revs as you let the clutch out. Watch the engine, if it rises as you do this the mount is due for replacement. (Don't do this facing a wall, other people or a cliff in case the car moves forward. Also don't jerk the car forward and slam on the brakes with your hood open as it can be traumatic when it slams down.) You don't want the car to move, just put some torque into the mounts.
There are hydraulic and solid mounts and apparantly they are not interchangable. I got mine at sobstory and according to my VIN I should have had a hydraulic mount, but I have a solid rubber mount. Snap a picture and send it to Jim on a jpg to visually confirm what you need. Mine was about $35 and it took an hour or so to do it. I removed the skid plate and fans and jacked up the engine slightly (use a block of wood and a bottle jack, not too much or you bend the shift linkage, only an inch or so). Next time I would just drain and pull the radiator, too many small screws to deal with on the fans, at least it gives you a reason to flush the coolant.
On the mount arrangement itself, two verticle bolts into the frame have to be removed, then one horizontally through the mount and two on a band that wraps the circular mount into a recess on the engine (transmission)block. The mount has a dimple to orient the mount into the engine, make sure it lines up right. Suggest using air tools to finish up as if you don't get it tight the mount can make a noise. Ask me how I know.
But its a big result for a minimum of bucks, helps the car smooth out and ride better as the engine isn't jumping around. This also saves stress on your exhaust system. These comments apply to a 92 900S 5sp/176,000 miles with solid mounts, I'm not versed on automatics or hydraulic mounts. Let us know how you make out.
