Tonight I exercised my car a bit, and when I got where I needed to go the temperature gauge was reading higher than high, meaning just under the red line. Since the fans hadn't started up, I shorted the thermoswitch connectors to get them moving for a couple of minutes. Then I got wise and tried the 47 ohm resistor (still riding around the car) trick again, although the car had passed the test two days ago. Tonight, after connecting the resistor to the temp gauge lead and ground, the gauge read around two thirds of the scale or higher. NOW it's time to rewire the lead. Has anyone out there done this before? The car is an '88 8 valve base, and the wire to the temp sensor goes into a harness. Mr. Bentley and associates tell me that the sensor wire connects to terminal 3 of the instrument panel as a "GL/VT" wire.
What color is GL? VT must be violet. I can't find a color code chart anywhere in the wiring diagram chapter. Is that Svedish for Gleen?
I'm also going to have to find the #3 ground behind the instrument panel to check it. I have already overhauled the engine ground near the alternator.
Then all of a sudden the temperature gauge needle read around half for most of the way home, when it normally resides well over half to around two-thirds reading. I know, I know, I should have done this a long time ago. Sorry. Still, any help and wisdom would be appreciated before the post expires.
