after waiting till the car had cooled, and after posting the message above... i went and tightened all the hose clamps. I found that there appears to be a split in the plastic of the expansion tank (looks original from 88!) at the small hose (the one that goes from/to the radiator) plastic nipple where it joins the actual tank. The hose itself looks fine.... but if i move the hose around, the plastic moves too and coolant leaks.
At operating temp it must be drawing air in here as coolant circulates!
So - i will order a new expansion tank tommorrow (monday) and fit it to see. As far as I can tell it will solve the bubbles problem.
Still doesnt explain why such a low temp gauge reading at op temp/cruise - would think it would be around other way - ie. hotter!
unless the temp gauge is slightly off.
no problems I guess!
