Well, theres been this knocking or rattling in my motor that I've been trying to pretend doesn't exist for the last several weeks. After my 200 mile roadtrip this last weekend it has grown noticably louder. The knock/rattle doesn't sound as deep as many of the rod knocks I've heard in other cars. It seems to be emanating from the rear of the motor in the vicinity of the timing chain cover.. Its pretty hard to pinpoint though; I can't tell if it's coming from the top end or the bottom.

My first thought was the timing chain is rattling due to a worn out "pad", or too much slack in the chain. The thing is that it is loudest at idle, hot or cold. What I've read on the timing chain rattle issue indicates that one wouldn't hear it at idle once it's warmed up. I wouldn't the noise sounds like a chain rattling either.

Any thoughts on any other likely causes of the noise? Its an '88 SPG BTW.

Time to go have a beer to fend off the depression caused by the price quote for a timing chain given to me by a local shop...
