vacuum leaks... Posted by JimBlake [Email] (#141) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JimBlake) on Tue, 1 Oct 2002 13:57:40 In Reply to: Yes, I cleared the codes..., vern, Tue, 1 Oct 2002 13:39:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There's about a mile of vacuum hoses in the dashboard for the vent dampers. Well, maybe 1/4 mile.
Each time you park the car, set the air distribution knob in a different position before you shut off. After being parked for a while, there should still be enough vacuum to operate the dampers. Mine's OK overnite. If that's OK, then you've just eliminated the need to dismantle your dashboard to search for leaks. Hope for the best! If not, the first thing to suspect would be the check valve at the reservoir bottle.
Same thing for the brake vacuum booster (if you have one). After a few hours, you should still have vacuum in the booster.
You could also try the propane test... Use a propane torch, not lit. Spray propane along the hoses & around the fittings. A vacuum leak will suck the gas in & your idle speed will increase.
