I own a 1989 900s 16v non-turbo. I replaced the head gasket recently and before doing so carefully marked the distributor to line back up for re-assembly. I do not own a timing light and therefore figuredthis was the best way to set it up. I have since acquired a timing light and attempted to set the timing as per Townsend recommendations on the web site (by the way EXCELLENT site).

When I checked the timing at idle it was reading between 14 & 15 degrrees btdc which is close to what it is suppose to be. I attempted to get it right on 14 and moved the distributor housing and no change on the timing marks. I moved it about 10-15 degrees each way past the mark I made and it made absolutely no difference.

Am I doing something wrong or do I need to remove vacuum lines or something else to set the timing?

Right now I left it at the marks I had scribed into the head and distributor housings and the car has a good strong idle and accelerates good, fuel consumption is also decent as I am getting about 400km to about 45liters for city driving conditions.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
