Let's look at the basics ...
Usually coils don't fail.
Randy's advice for checking the cap and rotor are good. Check the cap to see if the spring-loaded electrode in the center is still there.
Pull the AMM and see if it will start.
Is the hall effect connector on the side of the distributor solidly attached to the distributor? Try moving it while someone cranks the car to see if you get spark. It fails more on Turbos, but it's not unneard that it would fail on a non-turbo.
Do you know somebody with a spare ingition amplifier for tn '86 900S. Try swapping the unit. I believe that the one in the '86 is unique to the '86.
Check the spark plugs. Are they wet with gas? That would be an indication that the ignition amplifier is still giving a signal to the ECU.
But it could also be a failed fuel pump relay.
If the Townsend Imports site was up, I'd give you a link to the page for no-start checks for LH 2.2, but it's not up at the moment. It has a sequence for checking components that will lead to the culprit.
