From my perspective, ONLY! DIY that know excactly what they are doing and have the tools for it should be allowed to work on there own car, IF they are planning to take the car to a reputable shop for work later on, they feel they are not competent off.
The reason for this is that if I am going to look for a difficult problem, (faultracing) I need to be 100% sure that all other repairs are done do specs. And that include routing of vacuum hoses, electric crimp connections, right type of ignition parts etc.etc.
If I DON'T know that all the basic stuff is up to perfect standard, that's where I have to start my faulttracing and pretty much go over everything that the owner tried to save money on by doing himself.
All this cost money for the owner, money that he tried to save.
As for parts, we can barely buy parts for less than what the big online shops are selling them to the general public. This is something that is more and more common with our computerized world where you can go online and get superprices from another part of the country or world.
What you need to keep in mind is when it comes to warranty, we leave 1 year warranty on parts and labor. We would never leave any warranty on parts if customer brought it in himself. And the customer would have to pay for the labor again if the part broke.
The online parts supplier doesn't need more than a big warehouse in the outskirts of a city, where it's cheap rent. The auto shops needs to be where it's convenient for the customer to drop of there cars. This could mean a much higher cost in rent, and that needs to be covered by profit from both parts and labor.
The shop labor is NOT a golden goose that generate the whole profit for the shop, price difference on parts is another part that make the shop survive and stay in business.
The example you bring up with the driveaxles is where you probably got fooled by the "other" mechanic.
In very few cases does a Saab need new "driveaxles". Most of the time they only need new rubber boots ( which is about $25.00 each + labor) sometimes if the customer have let the car go and drive with broken boots, it might need a new outer C/V joint plus rubber boot ( $180.00 + labor) another case is that it needs a new inner driver and tripod bearing. But rarely a whole driveaxle. Many rebuilders of driveaxles does a terribly bad job, and they don't last very long.
This is my end of the story.
Cheers
Anders
