strange tire wear

My SPG sports Pirelli P8000's, I've had them for almost two years now. The other day, after a panic stop that was more 'panic' than 'stop', I checked out the treads on all four wheels for the first time in a while. (Usually I'd just eyeball the treads on the front.) I noticed that three of the tires have lots of tread left, but the rear left tire is almost bald. Does anyone know why the tires might wear this way? More hardware on the left side of the car? (I know the spare is on that side but it doesn't seem heavy enough to cause this kind of anomaly.)
I'm interested in anyone's theories...and while we're at it, I'm planning on dumping these soon anyway - with winter coming up here in MA and these tires obviously not up to the task, I'm looking into some really nice snow tires to get me through til spring when I'll buy some new all seasons or performance tires. Anyone have any recommendations? The Michelin Pilot series snow tires have caught my eye...
Thanks
Bry M.
