I doubt the dragging parking brake theory. To wear the tire from braking, the brake would have to be dragging A LOT, and you'd notice it from the smoke pouring out of the brake.
How even is the tire wear across the tread? My first thought is an inflation problem. If the wear is only on the outsides, and the center is fine, the tire was underinflated. If the center is worn and not the outsides, the tire was overinflated.
If the tire is worn mostly on the inside or outside, then there is an alignment problem. This is tricky because the rear isn't easily adjusted, if at all. I'm not a 900 rear-alignment expert.
As to snow tires, I'm big on using Scandinavian tires on Scandianvian cars. My preference is Gislaveds or Nokian. I've been running Gislaved NordFrosts for a few years, and find them to be excellent snow tires.
