Wally,
My current daily driver tan 1984 900S, and silver sister of same year--that is now my parts car--both have factory front automatically heated seats, as Ari described.
Well, I must confess had to retrofit my '84, not because it didn't have heated seats--it did--but because the previous owner had worn out the original auto. driver's seat (which was heated), and replaced it with the later dash controlled type heated seat (and hadn't done the necessary jerry-rigging to get it to work on the '84 wiring setup).
After a lot of figuring and scrutiny over my Bentley 8V manual, I thought I'd try to get that seat working. First, I checked my heating pad with an ohmmeter and found an open circuit--bad news. I took seat out, took loose one side of seat bottom cover and found I needed to repair two breaks in the seat bottom heating pad. I re-installed seat.
Then, I looked up TSN classifieds, got a dash controller, some lengths of 16 guage wire, some wire taps, and some male and female spade terminal connectors. After about 2 1/2 hours of standing on my head (had put the seat back in the car after reparing breaks in pad heating grid) and running wires under the door sill plate and up into the dash, I had an operational heated seat with dash control in my 1984 S!!! (At 1 a.m., no less!)
Ah, such is the life of a SAAB tinkerer! I'll try to do the fix this weekend or next and take time to shoot good photos!
