You may very well have a wiring harness problem due to cat heat, but you might just have a bad ground. Possibly the current in the brake light circuit is finding its way back to ground through the ignition, which keeps the car running. First clean the battery terminals and the grounds at the trans cover, radiator crossmember, and head near the intake runners. That might fix it without much work.
However, I think the bad ground might be down at the shift console. Pull the driver's seat and remove the plastic covers over the shifter and the ignition switch. Peel back the carpet to get a good look the wiring harness coming from the ignition switch leading forward along the tunnel, maybe some melted wires in there. Check the ground wires at the ground point connector on the side of the shifter housing. I'd check the voltages at the ignition switch connectors, but you'll probably just find power at the "run" contact when the key is in the off position, which will verify the problem...and I'm not sure how likely it is to have a shorted switch.
I'm not positive that you have a ground point back in the rear hatch area on a 94, but that is also something to check. Last check the rear tail light assembly for bad connections. Convertibles and four doors have a known circuit defect. I don't have a Bentley manual in front of me but they show where all the grounds are.
